Rating 3.8/5.0
Where 5.0 is an escape movie which is exactly the opposite in its approach Peter Weir (who made the beautiful Master and the Commander) has done a fantastic job in realistically capturing this "walk to freedom". This realism is the mainstay of the story and Weir relies on it instead of delving too deeply into each of the characters and their motives. So by the end of it, you have not only empathised with the escapees, cursed the Commies and the Nazi's but also feasted your eyes on one breathtaking landscape after another. Not only this, you would also get to know that a poisonous black snake found in the Gobi desert (in Mongolia) tastes like chicken if cooked on stone over low heat! Useful information if you ever feel like roaming around Gobi without food or water.
There's a lot to talk about in the acting department. Colin Farrell is a revelation, Ed Harris is perfect as usual and Jim Sturgess holds his own amongst this stellar cast which includes Mark Strong and Dragos Bucur.
A perfect weekend watch when you want to be transported "free of cost" to another world!
